1. REALLY, TRULY LISTEN!
Pay attention to the words and message others convey. Try to avoid thinking what to say next and focus on what they are saying.
2. BE FRIENDLY
At least, appear to be friendly. The aim is to show that you are a sociable, open and relaxed person interested in having an interesting conversation with them.
Develop a ‘friendly vibe’:
– maintain good eye contact
– open and non-threatening posture
– nod your head in agreement
3. BE CURIOUS
A valuable tool to have is your own curiosity. The best way to engage the person is by having a conversation with them. Your curiosity will reveal itself while asking open ended questions.
4. CONVERSATION IS A TWO-WAY STREET
A best way to engage a person is to have an enjoyable chat. Also, no one likes to feel like they being interrogated. As long as you are open, people will usually respond in kind. They will be also open and talkative about their experiences.
5. DON’T JUDGE
Stories have a special ability to show an aspect of our true self. And by collecting their stories, we must respect their values and beliefs. Some of the best stories I have heard are some of the saddest and darkest ones.
